Mermaids, 2017-2023

This series is inspired by the histories of African women in the Brazilian coasts who engineered forms of protest and anti-colonial black liberation. The women used botanical plants as forms of weapons to protect their ecosystems and maintain their cultural heritage. Combining the mythological stories of Drexyan underground mermaids (the transformation of murdered enslaved populations thrown at sea during the Slave Trade into underwater mermaids), the women water spirits live at sea and on land as the protectors of living ecosystems.
